2008: Politics Gone Wild

In case you have not noticed, the race for 08 is officially out of control. Between the questions over Mitt Romney's Religion, and analysis of whether or not Obama is black; it is enough to drive any sane person off the edge. It boggles the mind. In a time when Americans are constantly voicing concern about the overly political nature of our culture; this coverage is not exactly comforting. If it is not the Republicans with their evangelical litmus test; its the Democrats with their unwavering loyalty to the Clintons.
What happened to races based on Issues and creating prosperity for future generations. It seems that we are more concerned with whose soundbite came out the best. Abraham Lincoln never had to pass a litmus test to get nominated by his party. Instead he made it to the top based on merit. Yet in modern day America, it is more important to analyze a candidates stance on abortion rather then whether or not they can actually lead the nation.
Just look at the rise of republican Mike Huckabee. Here is a man that as pointed out by Robert Novak is probably the least conservative candidate in the race. Yet due to a couple of niche issues that are valued by the infamous "moral majority", he has surged to second in the polling of the Iowa Cuacus. Abortion is not going to define our country for years to come; yet social security, health care, and most importantly the War on Terror are.
Even better is the unbelievable analysis of Barack Obama. First the America Media (Loyal to the Clintons above all else) was questioning his "blackness"; this was enough to send any normal American into a mind numbing coma. That was shortly followed by prodding into his past drug use. Now obviously this is coming out of the Clinton camp which sees Obama as the one potential threat to Mrs. Clinton's inevitability. Yet Barack had a good retort to Bill Clinton's infamous "I did not inhale response". Barack responded when asked if he inhaled with "Yes I Inhaled... That was the point". Now as much as I enjoy a good piece of comedic quotation, the central issue remains what dose this have to do with the issues facing this country in the coming years.
When are we as Americans going to wise up to these shenanigans. On one hand you have conservatives assailing proven leaders like Giuliani for stances on abortion and gay rights. On the other you have the anti war left forcing its candidate to be against the concept of American victory in the War on Terror. This is country is going down a very treacherous path. We are going to need a true leader to guide us not the usual crowd of over political figures who are more concerned with winning then doing whats right.

Actually, Abraham Lincoln did have to pass a religion litmus test, but during his 1846 campaign for Congress. He passed it beautifully, by basically telling an evangelical preacher that his own beliefs were none of the preacher's business.
I wish our current candidates would show the courage to tell the Religious Right to back off.
Here's the story about Lincoln:
