Man's Business evicted because he doesn't speak Spanish

Tom McKenna is a longtime business owner in Florida who is being forced out of his location because he does not speak Spanish. Details? The landlord, Ivan Munroe, stated that McKenna should consider another location because he wants to have "quality tenants serving the Spanish need in the area."

McKenna responded, "I guess I don't serve the 'Spanish need,' whatever that means..."

"I have plenty of Spanish-speaking workers come in here to buy water for their landscaping crews," he said. "And people in the neighborhood use the vending machines out front to fill their water bottles for their homes." McKenna estimates that it will cost him anywhere from $10,000 to $15,000 to make the move...if he finds a new store. When asked why he would not attorney-up and fight this, he simply stated: "After this? I don't want to be here."

This is atrocious in my mind simply because this is just another form of accepted racism within our society. Try telling a Spanish-speaking business owner to move out and "relocate" because he does not serve the English (or American) need. Sad days, and a wrong direction for us. Someone needs to call out Mr. Munroe (but should also prepare to be called a racist).

Am I wrong here?

Here is the story from Florida.

This is the type of garbage that takes away my American pride. I wish he would fight it...

As a landlord, Mr. Munroe has the right to run his business anyway he chooses. While this could be a court battle, I believe Munroe would be able to come out on top because he says he has other reasons that forced him to push McKenna out of his place.

From the story you linked:

-"'He's not a good tenant, that's my opinion. He's been late on the rent.'" (Quoting Munroe)

-"Munroe said he had other problems with McKenna: a forklift that was never moved from the front of the store and salt and other supplies in messy piles in an unprotected side yard facing Dixie Highway." (other notes of unsatisfactory upkeep)

Ok Jayson, if he "has the right to run his business anyway he chooses" as a landlord, then try the example given of a white landlord evicting someone because they don't speak English. Could you imagine what that would turn into if "nappy headed ho's" turned into an ordeal?

By the way, I looked at the story too and you left some things out of your little quotes:

-You put in the latter part of what Munroe said, leaving out what he began with: "I can have a vision, can't I? And his business just doesn't fit there,"

-Munroe also stated that "Mexican people come in, you know they're going to stay. You know they're going to pay the rent." For some reason, he doesn't believe that McKenna's 7 years in that business was "staying-power."

I also wish it would goto trial because it would set a precedent for future instances (this will not be an isolated incident, or the frst).

I just think its a terrible thing that we've reached the point where we need to establish an official national language...thank you Arizona.

Those statements do not mean Mr. Munroe is a racist, nor does it mean he is kicking Mr. McKenna out because he doesn't speak Spanish.

Munroe is a businessman, and he is allowed to run it however he pleases, just as anyone else should. Whether or not people choose to make a big deal about it, protest it or take it to court is up to society. Obviously society is more concerned today with looking out for the victims within the minority, not the one white guy who claims to have been evicted because of his language or other.

Also, why do you consider it a "terrible thing" that other languages and cultures are coming to our country? Shouldn't we be proud of the fact that we are an open melting pot of diverse backgrounds? I am proud of who and what I am, just as I am sure every person is. How are those who come from other cultures and speak other languages any different? They should be able to come to America and remain what makes them proud to be them. That is what the USA is supposed to stand for.
