Gay Club wins the right to ban Straights
An Australian hotel & pub catering to homosexuals has recently won the right to ban heterosexuals from its property. Now, at the Peel Hotel in southern Melbourne, a place of business has the legislated right to discriminate based on sexuality. The Victoria's State Human Rights Commission in Australia prevents people from being discriminated against based on race, religion or sexuality under the equal opportunity laws.
The commission, however, views the equality laws differently. They backed the ruling, claiming that it was in line with the equal opportunity guidelines because they protect groups that are subject to discrimination.
My question here is: Who decides who is subject to discrimination? Isn't banning a certain group of people discrimination? This scenario assumes that any straight individual entering the bar would have the intent of harming those inside.
This is no different from banning African Americans from a "white" bar or banning gays from a "straight" bar. When are we going to get to a point where we fight discrimination by removing from public venues, not replacing it in benign form.
