An Interesting Week Off
I took this past week off to take a little vacation with the lovely Melody Johnson around my home state of Maryland and the Washington D.C. area. I must say, it is relaxing taking time away from the issues...but it is also a headache to come back into the seam and see what has come about this past week. Overall, the following instances I will talk about below make me question where we are going as a nation, culture and society. Lets begin.
In San Francisco, a Yale a cappella singing group was performing at a party. After singing the "Star Spangled Banner," however, they were attacked by a group of individuals, leaving one member with a broken jaw, another with a concussion and thensome. Unbelievable.
Last Friday in Wisconsin, an illegal immigrant was arrested, charged and indicted with the molestation of a little girl. At arraignment, however, the judge ruled that he would only need to post a $5,000 bail (even though he had prior convictions and was deported once already). He posted the cheap bail and was released, then obviously failed to show up at court on Monday. So, now Wisconsin has a convicted violent offender and child molestor roaming the streets. The judge felt that since his girlfriend lived in the area, he would not flee...he did not take into consideration, however, that it was the daughter of his girlfriend that he was molesting. He should have been held without bail until trial.
In New York City this week (1/10), the FDNY demanded that personal decorations be removed from all lockers. The many firefighters who decorated their lockers with photos of loved ones, fellow firefighters who have died in the line of duty, yellow ribbons supporting the troops and American flag decals are now banned. They later backed down slightly after a tremendous uproar from the firefighters, stating that they would allow some flags.
Yesterday, 1/12, the "victim" in the Duke rape case changed her story yet again. Today, Mike Nifong (the District Attorney pursuing the case) finally stepped back and requested to be taken off the case. He now looks at begin charged criminally for hiding evidence and pushing a case that had no warrant against 3 innocent student athletes.
Also on the 12th, two women in Chicago were arrested for pimping out underage girls via CraigsList. The women were using classifieds on the site advertising sex with a 16-year-old and 14-year-old in exchange for "donations" or "roses," code words for money.
Finally, in Vermont, another atrocity has been committed as a convicted child molestor abused a little boy more than 10 times, and the judge has felt it necessary to release him on probation with rehab. So, he is set free back into the neighborhoods as long as he doesn't do it again...hmmm...
Oh, and Chris Dodd (D-CT) is apparently having delusions and is going to make a run at the presidency in '08.
Overall, an interesting week.
